There have been several posting lately about how to tell if the vc is working. When I was test driving the van I bought recently, I wondered how to be sure the 4WD was really working. It had to be a test that the owner, who was with me, wouldn't object to! I ended up taking it to a place where a dirt embankment too steep to climb rose up from level ground, and just started up it. When the rear wheels got to the incline, everything started slipping, including the front wheels, and I figured it had to be ok. (You could do the same thing in reverse, no?)
