Mine is "neutral" for the first 6-8" of lift, then it raises itself; same for the dropping of the top. It's funny, tho, to hold the top on my forehead as I attach the safety strap clamp! I have nothing on the top for racks.. Maybe they get stressed when over-loaded (any guess is ok!)? The question was asked today by a '95 owner. I speculated they may wear out quickly. Probably we should establish whether the struts start, or become, soft from the rest of the group.
