What you are probably referring to is the "Anlasser" or starter. Thanks for you interesting and involved calculations. However, practice of has its own dynamics. My Diesel Vanagon regularly produced a mileage over 30mpg, usually around 7L/100km (~34mpg). It of course depends also on driving habits, terrain, temperature etc. The cold start advance uses more fuel since it produces less power. Helmut has posted a number of available accessories which I will check out.
