Harry: These excellent questions lead me to look at the Bentley and I must admit; I have flushed the brake fluid in both of our VWs three or four times and was not aware of the "lever" or about disconnecting the booster. On the other hand I have not had any brake or clutch trouble result from my method. I have bled them both ways; two-person and with vacuum pump with same good results. I like the pump method better because I can easily empty the reservoir so I can start flushing the system with fresh fluid instead of circulating the old stuff.
