Subject: Subaru too pricey; go Porsche

Tim Smith listed some Subaru engine prices at $4k and up. Just a quick reminder that in this price range, or even below, you begin to find some attractive deals on Porsche flat six engines from the late seventies and early eighties. The Porsche owners now think that anything less than 3.2 liters is small, so 3.0 liter engines, especially with some miles on them, can be found in this price range. Look in Porsche Panorama magazine (which your buddy who's a member of Porsche Club of America gets.) Excellence Magazine also has good classifieds, although it has a higher ratio of cars to parts than Pano. The main annual East Coast Porsche-only swap meet is coming up April 25 near Hershey PA. If you're not shopping for an engine, this is still a fun swap just to watch someone peel some hundreds off a roll and walk away with a no-rust no-bondo right rear corner of a 57 356.

If you don't mind giving up some ground clearance, these engines can be installed in a Vanagon with the stock Porsche exhaust system, saving that whole hassle, and the "adapter" to install a Porsche engine in a Vanagon is a $300 flywheel. Plus you don't have to confuse a poor Subaru engine about which way the car goes. B. -- William R.
