VW will accept your engine with the rod through the case. They will accept anything that happens from an internal mechanical failure. They do require the engine to be complete and assembled with the cylinder tins,(again, any condition, just there). The only cores they do not want are those with fire or flood damage. New engines from VW also come with balanced flywheel attached. Personally, when my engine gives up, I will go this route. I have yet to have a problem with their engines except some caused by customer stupidity.
