Subject: Syncro No Go = Clutch
Comments: To: Vanagon@Vanagon.com
Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII

Greetings Vanatics, A while back I sent a message with the subject "Syncro No Go" and it's time for a quick follow up. The symptoms were as though the van was in neutral OR the clutch was depressed, thus "No Go". Both the shifting controls and clutch looked and felt like they were operating properly.

The cause: the clutch plate was broken into 2 pieces. The outer ring with the friction material was severed from the inner portion that attaches to the tranmission input shaft. In this condition, the friction ring spun with the engine and pressure plate, while the inner portion just "sat" there with the transmission, not moving!

Regards, Jim Davis
