This word would be a hybrid word in German meaning something like hands on. What you are probably referring to is the "Anlasser" or starter.

Thanks for you interesting and involved calculations. However, practice of has its own dynamics. My Diesel Vanagon regularly produced a mileage over 30mpg, usually around 7L/100km (~34mpg). It of course depends also on driving habits, terrain, temperature etc. The cold start advance uses more fuel since it produces less power.
