An adapter plate between the engine and bell housing would be necessary
to retain the automatic.  However, I wonder if the Vanagon automatic would
be a desirable match for the TDI.   I don't think it's possible to change the
automatic shift points, unless you shift manually of coarse.  I wonder if there
are any Porsche automatics that could be used (and wouldn't cost more than
a TDI engine) ?
