Hey volks,
Speaking as someone with an '84 model, I can personally attest to the
fact that putting in a motor other than the 1.9 Wasserboxer will
require a bit of surgery. It'll take some Frankensteining to put in a
Type IV- braces, making sure the tin will fit, etc., and putting in a
Corvair will be a REAL bitch. Just remember a couple of things:
1. A Corvair boxer turns oppositely to the VW boxer, so you'll have to
set your final drive up like a pre-68 Transporter- in "reverse" to
what all the other trannys have. Also remember that in '83, the
trannys got flimsier- so see if you can get an '82 or earlier trans.
2. You won't neccessarily go faster with a Corvair, due to the tranny
ratios; however, you'll get to your favorite cruising faster and have
an easier time pulling those hills in Tennesee or wherever you live.
3. Uncaducky, you'll have to find out how to heat your bus. That means
dashboard surgery, replacing the Wasserboxer blower assembly with the
aircooled one. Are you going to use the Corvair gas heater? What about
the gas heater that Canadian Wasserboxers use?
4. With all of the expenses considered, you're approaching the expense
of a Wasserboxer long block, or perhaps another junkyard queen
possibility- a 3.0L Porsche boxer.
Just think about what you're in for...
Best regards,
Sam
