With this talk of engine fires and decklids and such, I thought I'd add my couple cents... Fire extinguishers are available from the marine industry that mount in the engine compartment of boats, or in this case, your vanagon. They are set to go off automatically in case of a fire. There was a women listmember here about 7 or 8 months ago from the East coast that swore by them. She had completely lost her '91 Westfalia and wasn't about to do it again. These setups can be had for under $200 I'm sure. If you travel with a dog or other animal it's a must! JordanVW had mentioned recently seeing a burnt up van and I too just photographed a completely toasted late model. The door handles were melted off. I think the passenger side molding might have been the only salvageable part left. The van is owned by a bud of mine, he said when he gets ready to crush it I can come out and take what I want. I'll probably take the drivetrain just to see what it looks like. I'll have pics to show as soon as I get the film developed. "Chris, you should go get some photos too!"
