Subject: how to read the Weakly Statz ... :)
Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII
since it might NOT be "intuitively obvious to the casual observer", here's
some tips on how to decipher the Weakly Statz ...
WHERE you all are ...
-AUS 1 -YUG 1 IA 1 ND 1 PA.PITT 3
-AUS.ACT 2 -ZA 2 IA.CR 1 NE 4 PA.YORK 2
any abbreviation with a leading - is a "foreign" country (well, *I* live in
the u.s., :) without the -, it's a U.S. state. for example,
-AUS is Australia, one person there. -AUS.ACT is Australia.Capital Territory,
2 people there. and so forth for -AUS.NSW (New South Wales) and so on.
-YUG is Yugoslavia, -ZA is South Africa.
IA is Iowa, IA.CR is Iowa, Cedar Rapids (nearest big city).
if there's not a city close enough, it may be listed as NJ.S (New Jersey,
South) ... meaning they live in the middle between any large cities.
usually, i start splitting out the cities when a state/country gets over
about 10 folks ... but it also depends on how many are in a "city area" and
whether the taco i had for lunch was any good :) ... in other words, there's
sometimes not a lot of "logic" behind the splits.
-CAN.NB.FRE 2 CA.BA 46 LA 1 NY 2 TX.SAN 2
CA.BA is one of the earliest separations ... it's the Bay Area around San
Francisco, CA.
-CAN.PQ 1 CA.WC 1 MD.BAL 11 NY.NYC 7 VA.FRED 2
CA.WC in this case is West Central California. i just haven't come up with
a better abbreviation. and they're not close enough to a "big city" or
enough of them to put just the city name. yet.
Unknown 226 Total 829
that's right: 226 of you haven't told me WHERE you hang out. :)
and for the WHAT portion, well ... it OUGHT to be more obvious ...
50 Microbus 0, 59 Microbus 2, 68 Bus 8, 80 Vanagon 19, 91 Eurovan 1
NO 1950 buses (gotcha!! they weren't made until 1952 ... but it makes the
kludgey program loop better to do it this way). ): TWO 1959 buses,
8 1968 buses, 19 1980 buses, and one 1991 bus. pretty simple, right?
Microbus 44 - Camper 12, Panel 3, Pickup 8, Kombi 4, Deluxe 6
now, it's a little more complicated. of ALL the 1950-1967 Microbuses (i had
to call them something to differentiate from "Buses" which i chose to call
the 1968-1979 T2's), and there were a total of 44 of them (on this Statz.
each list, Type2 and Vanagon, has its own totals. yup, they do differ ...
cause different folks are on each list).
anyway, of the 44 total Microbuses, 12 of them are Campers (of one type or
another (Westy, Devon, etc), 3 are Panel trucks, 8 are Pickups, either
Single-cab or Double-cab, 4 are Kombis, and 6 are Deluxe models.
Bus 128 - Camper 73, Panel 1, Pickup 6, Kombi 4
samething for the 1968-1979 buses.
Vanagon 633 - Camper 320, Kombi 3, Pickup 15, Diesel 29, Syncro 105
Eurovan 64 - Camper 27, Panel 1, Pickup 0, Diesel 4, Syncro 0
and so forth.
then i just redo the totals of each "generation" (T1,T2,T3,T4) with the
total lines from the WHERE portion:
Vanagon Mailing List 829 people, 869 vehicles
44 Microbus, 128 Bus, 633 Vanagon, 64 Eurovan
14 Wanabus, 165 Unknown Sniveling Lurkers :)
and that's 165 of you who haven't told me what sort of bus you have. if you
don't have one, but WANT one, that makes you a Wanabus ... which have their
own little total. :)
and that's it. the rest is blatant "infomercial advertising" :)
and just so everybody knows (at least once), Unca Joel (me) is NOT the
list admin for either of the bus lists. the Vanagon list is run by
Chris Smith and Ron Lussier. the Type2 list is run by Ken Hooper and
Marc Edwards (or was, before he moved! :) me? i'm just the dummy who
got curious about who had what and where they were, and this minor
curiosity grew and grew into a time-consuming obession, weighing heavily
upon my tired old grey-haired shoulders. :) yeah, it takes about an
hour daily to keep this mess updated. yeah, i see SOME of your messages
about how to fix this or that on a 1963 Syncro Splitty with 43" tires and
eight four-barrel Weber carbs ... but i don't catch ALL of the public
confessions. :)
anyway, that's the explanation of the Weakly Statz. have a good Weekend, all!!
