I'm assuming you are referring to a motor with hydraulic lifters? If so, the procedure is: first get the cylinder to top dead center, back the adjusting screws completely off the valve stems, turn them back in just until they touch the valve stem, then go two (2) turns in further. At least that is what Bentley says...
