Subject: Oil Filters - What are the differences? Do they matter?
Comments: To: vanagon@vanagon.com

Hi Volks:

Gosh it's so nice to have the archives back! Thanks guys!

Did an oil change on the "new" Syncro Westie this last weekend! (precious vital fluids) I irrigated it with about 4.25 quarts of Syntech 10W-30. It seems to really like it so far.

So, about those OIL FILTERS. I checked the archive and it seems there is a slight consensus toward the OEM filters. However, I couldn't really find any solid reasons convincing me that OEM is SO MUCH better than Fram, other brands, etc. What's wrong with the aftermarket filters anyway? Am I making a HUGE mistake by using a Fram? (I used the Fram 'cause I couldn't find the right tool to fit over the end of the VW OEM filter I got from the dealer ($8.50)) Well, the PO had a Pennzoil filter on the rig, installed by some jiffy-lube joint. The Syncro's lifters were making lots of racket, but now with the synthetic oil and a new filter it's as quiet as a purring mouse - CAT. One thing I did notice about the filters. Upon looking inside the filters (Fram vs VW) I could see a spring at the bottom of the OEM filter; none on the Fram. Does that have something to do with the by-pass valve?

Anyway, I suppose I'll switch to the OEM filters during the next oil change if I can find a tool to fit the thing. Is there anything/any brand better than OEM, other than Amsoil's by-pass filter setup? What ARE the best oil filters out there?

I'm changing the coolant on Saturday. Anyone wanna come over, stand around, watch and laugh?
