Subject: oil drain plug
Comments: To: Vanagon@vanagon.com

A great big Thanks to all who responded to my distress call yesterday (Ken, Eric, Don. Dan, David and Kyle), as usual you were "spot on" with your advice. I went to my local FLAPS to see what they had to offer. They suggested an expanding rubber plug and a trip to my mechanic. They did not try to sell me a do-it-yourself kit. I don't know if they didn't have one or the salesman wasn't aware of one. Anyway, I installed the rubber plug and for a fleeting moment thought it would be OK till the next oil change. Then I realized that I will soon be in Moab, Utah, 4-wheelin' with the gang at the Syncro Safari, and this plug hangs down below the engine!! So I called Mark, my friendly mechanic to see what it would cost to repair. If I supplied my own oil, he would do it for $35...so off I went. Mark is a very good mechanic and lets me help, I not only save money, but I get to learn. I put the van up on the rack and just reached up to touch the rubber plug and it dropped right out, and fortunately, right into the oil pan on the floor, followed by 4.5 quarts of oil!! Good tip, Eric ( "Don't trust that rubber plug" ) So the oil got drained and Mark drilled, tapped and inserted a coil, screwed in the plug and away we go.

I still have't checked on the cost of the kit to do this work, but I think I saved money because although the kit includes a "tap set" I could use over and over, I hope this is the only time I will need this repair this year. And I learned how easy it can be done just by following the advise of "The List".

Thanks again!!
