I believe if you do a search on the archives for "windage", you will find the end of discussion about the causes of higher running temp from more than a half filled (or so) oil pan. Basicly, if I remember correctly, after a certain level the spinning crankshaft will suck oil out of the sump - causing more friction within the oil itself - I believe the term for this is windage.
