Subject: 87 vanagon jump-started then over heated

I had owned the van for two days when I left the lights on, thus draining the battery. After jump starting, it would overheat. I noticed that the fan was not turning on. The fan was tested by the only way that I knew how, and that was to put the jumper cables to the fan for a split second. It ran. I found the "cooling fan relay (second stage)" with the other relays under the dash. Replaced it. Changed the coolant. It runs at a cooler temperature than it did previously; is that because the old relay was abused from so many jump starts and it eventually gave way?
