An even cheaper solution is to carry full glass comprehensive.  Even with
that, collision, and $1 mil limits on liability, we pay only about $150
every six months for our '81 Westie.  When I needed a windshield in
December, I called my agent, and a couple of days later a guy came to the
house with a new windshield and put it in.  No muss, no fuss, and no cost
to me.
