Actually, my motor can "go for it" off the line- I've got gobs of low-end torque. It's the hill thing that wigs me out, that's where many VW boxers fry their exhaust valves where I live.

If you've got plenty of pad left after 140k- you do alot of freeway cruising, yes?- and your brakes aren't so hot, you might have a problem with glazing, which happens when you apply the brakes at high speed. You might be able to get around that by braking slowly around town, so the brakes don't heat up but the glazed surface can wear off. Vanagons do have good brakes because most of the weight is in the rear, so when the vehicle stops, the weight is mostly split 50/50 between the front and rear brakes.
