If you read it on the list it's probably from my posting. I got it from an ad that VW periodically runs in the magazine "Diesel Progress". Diesel Progress also published some VW engine and drive information in the June 91, Aug 92 and Aug '97 issues. Otherwise most VW engine development tends to be reported in "Motortechnische Zeitschrift". (In German of course.) For instance in the March '85 issue they describe the mounting modifications needed to install a (passat style) turbo diesel into the vanagon. The April '85 issue describes the 2.1l wasserboxer, and for the newest most powerful alternative in the new transporter one can read about the T4's VR6 motor in the Feb '97 issue.

These publications would be difficult to find on the newstands (No bikini clad females on the front page), but good research libraries might have them. Some are available translated into english in the MIT Barker engineering library.
