I had the same problem on my '81 Vanagon about three years ago. Since I live in Norther Ontario, and parts are hard to find, I simply cut off the threaded portion of the rod, and had hard hex bolts welded on, and replaced both sides while at it.

Since then I've driven to both extremes of the Continent, on some of the roughest roads around, The repair only cost me $20.00 Cdn.
