Vanagons are not easy, I have done it with the classic coat hanger above the lock knob. The best way would be to use some suction cups and just pull off the rear side windows. It has always amazed me how easy they come out. Other then putting the glass back in there is no damage.

The easiest VW to break into has got to be Golf II's. I locked the keys in mine once and found that by unscrewing one of the license plate lights that the rear hatch latch mechanism can then be operated. Sorry to all those Golf II owners.
