Subject: where have all the wires gone?(i mean where do all the wires go)

forst of, to all y'all who don't know, i have a 1984 VW Vanagon with a 3.4liter chevy v-6.

now to the question. the shop thattookk teh 1.9l engine out of the van and put in my 3.4 liter engine has screwed me over big time. i had asked them to label allold wires and where they go et.al. but they didn't! and now, it's time for me to start wiring up the new gauges and routing the wires, but there are literally hundreds of unlabeled wires sticking out of the firewall, and the relay box(left-side of the engine comp.), and i am stuck.

what i originally had in mind, was to fid out any wires that ran from the front of the van to the back of the van, that i didn't need any more, and use them for other purposes, but now, even with the bentley manual, i still can't make heads or tails of the mess.

my plan now, is to label the wires i know are absolutely necessary to the operation of the van, and rip all the other wires out and start from almost scratch. i would keep all the wires that stay up front the same, but i would replace all the wires running the length of the car with wires whose purpose is known.

better suggestions would be appreciated(that means all suggestions).
