For anyone interested, the '91 Vanagon with the bad engine listed in the Washington Post Classifieds this weekend is the same one I went to see a few weeks ago. This is the guy who claimed to have been scouring the countryside looking for Vanagons to ship to South Africa. He said this is the last one he has and is not looking for them anymore since they are too hard to find these days. By the way this '91 Vanagon is trashed - has a bad paint job (probably covering up rust and who knows what else) and is filthy inside. The engine still runs but oil blows up through a hole in the top of the case where a rod once peeped through. He wants $3000. I would have to think hard before I paid him $300.
