Thank you all for your input on this tire size ordeal. It seems that I have gotten an education along with Sears.

After finding out that I have the wrong size & type of tire on my van. I went back to Sears, who installed those Goodyear Weatherhandlers about seven months ago, and discussed with the manager, that those tires were inappropriate for Vanagons. I also showed him the letter from a Goodyear rep. stating that those tires were not for Vanagons due to GVWR!

The Sears store is taking back those Weatherhandlers for a full refund, including mounting and balancing. I will be exchanging those tires for a set of Michelin LTX 195/75R14 "C" tires.(www.michelin.com) They are 6-ply rated with a load C range. They can take 1435 lbs. load per tire. The GVWR on the door of my '85 says 5269 lbs. So I will be safe riding once again.

The handling will improve I'm sure, but not as much as when I replaced the upper control arm bushings!

Thanks, if it were not for this listserv (newsgroup), I would have probably never found out that I was endangering me and my family. I would expect tire stores to know this information! Sears was not the only place with the wrong tires for the Vanagon.
