JCWhitney carries a number of 12v florescent fixtures. They are low load and come in a myriad of sizes/wattages. Plenty of light.

We have a couple in our van, a dual 13 watt tube design about 10" long, and a dual 20 watt design, about 21" long. We glued three 1" x 2" rare-earth magnets to the back, so they will stick anywhere on the van. Also, we attached 12' cords so we can use them outside the van when camping. Beats the heck out of kerosene or propane lanterns, ugh!
