Sorry, I didn't get to reply sooner, I may have saved you some work. My '86 syncro GL was running rich, really rich, even getting gas in my oil. I thought that maybe a sensor or vacuum leak or some big problem.

Dealer said it was likely the fuel pressure regulator. . . Whaddaya know, it turned out it was the fuel pressure regulator! Dealer price was about $175 (canadian) but I got a BOSCH one from local auto parts guy for $90. Seems to have done the trick.
