Subject: Vanagon Clutch Chattering, Sachs problem
Comments: To: vanagon@vanagon.com

I have a shop in Tacoma WA and we have been having a real problem with the discs from Sachs that were manufactured in Canada. We have warranteed 5 or 6 clutch jobs in the last 2 years because of a real bad chatter that shows up after 30 to 120 days and occurs only when hot. One Vanagon that had these symptoms had a Canadian disc that had been installed at the dealer. Note that not all Canadian clutches we have installed chatter but every one that chattered like this was manufactured in Canada. We have not had any problem with the German discs or with Luk brand discs. I have been able to get Sachs to admit there is a problem but so far they have only replaced one disc. We are, I hope, just a few days away from receiving something from Sachs for our warranty claims. Our WD returned over 350 new Canadian discs to Sachs. Since we discovered the problem, we have been using clutch kits from Luk without any problems.

Regards,

Brian
