What brands have you looked at? I don't have any experience with these, but there are at least 4 different rear carriers available from Germany, priced between $200 and $400. Exchange rates are excellent right now.

I have a 1998 accessory catalog and it again shows the Paulchen Vanagon rack that was believed to not be available anymore. I wonder if they are making them again.
