The third-hand '85/86 (French) Diesel Syncro Westy that I owned while I was living in Morocco came with cracked CV boots and cracked ball-joints (or something in the front end). There was a noticeable clacking/clicking/grinding noise when I turned real sharply, otherwise it was OK. I drove for about a year that way (all through the dessert at 40 degrees C) with no problems, When I left, I sold the van and the front end died on the new owner. I'll not let my current syncro go with cracked CV boots.
