I added AC to my 82 Diesel Vanagon. I used the overhead stock interior control panel and evaporator from a junked vanagon. I purchased a 2-fan condenser unit and mounted it under the van (in the Westy the position was on the same side as the fridge but a little to the rear). I used a rotery compresser unit mounted where the alternator goes. The alternator was moved to a lower position.

I worked super! I put another 100k miles on that van and vacationed from Key West to the Hudson Bay. I the South - I would pull into a reasturant and leave it idle with the AC on - because I had a dog - and never a problem.

Yes, it robbed some power from the engine but I could live with it. At highway speeds it was not very noticeable. It was very noticeable going up some long mountain climbs as in PA. and NY. Then, I would have to shut of the AC.
