This is very true, perhaps the driving style is the key. I started driving Beetles in 1963, all bought new, and I was told to "drive the bejesus" out of them, warm them up by keeping the rpm down for a few blocks then shift at redline.

With the water cooled engines, I try to keep the rpm below 4000 until the temp gauge lifts off the peg, then I shift around 5000 rpm. My only problem engine was the 84 Vanagon which started having head problems around 70-80K. I had the heads re-sealed, but continued to have water leaks until I traded it at 127K. I did not follow VWs instructions, I used Phosphated coolant.
