Ron,

Since my defense of the "extraordinarily bad engine" started this thread, here are the numbers for the two Vanagon's I have owned...

'83.5 1.9 GL 128,000 miles '86 2.1 Syncro 111,000 miles

The first one was sold as-is, and the Syncro (daily driver) had a rebuilt AVP installed just about a year ago (great engine). My old '59 Splittie had an 1800cc installed -- the engine never gave me any trouble, but one time I torqued the tranny in two!
