Re: the survey on the bad engine. I drove my 88 Vanagon camper 160,000 kms without doing anything to the head gaskets. They began to leak at about 60,000 but I just added antifreeze. From what I am hearing I could have had VW replace the gaskets at their expense. Too bad I was not on the list then. Anyway, the van is now in a new owner's hands and I have a '97 Eurovan camper.

I never added water to the antifreeze. I always put it in straight. Is that unwise?

I don't know if I was using phosphate free antifreeze or not. It was Canadian Tire's top of the line. Is this an issue with the '97 VR6 engine as well?? (The dealer has yet to get me an owner's manual. I have only the camper manual so far.)

Thanks, Terry
