Subject: Re: Westy LP leaking at tank

I bought an 85 Westfalia with a leaky propane tank. The leak occured on the valve stem that turns the tank on/off. (Not sure what it is called but it has a big wheel like you would find on a garden hose). It turns out the valve stem goes bad over time and will leak (a common problem). Adjust the wheel so the tank is half open. Does this make the problem better or worse? Adjust the wheel so the tank is all the way open. Again, better or worse? On mine, when the tank was half opened (or half closed for the pessamistic types :-) the propane would leak. Full open or full closed, the tank would not leak. The solution was to replace the valve stem which was pretty easy. I bought a new stem from my local "Propane and Propane accesories" dealer for $18.00. Installation required a screwdriver, ratchet set and 10 minutes of time.

One warning, the valve stem is inserted "backwards" from the standard (i.e. turn clockwise to remove). So use the "right hand rule" but use your left hand :-).

Hope this helps,

Paul Borghese
