The early 4000's used 1.7 VW motors, then 1.8's, then high compression, knock sensor controlled 1.8's. The same motors were used progressively in the golf/jetta platform. The 1.8 is a truly wonderful motor due to its bottom end strength, longevity and excellent parts availability. My 1.8 turbo motor has powered my rabbit pickup to 14 second quarter miles with zero failures. ~170 hp. PSD.
