Subject: Metal shavings under valve covers
Comments: To: vanagon@vanagon.com

Hello- Since we have had some sun over in the Bay Area, I finally got to crawl under the 87 syncro van. Last week, it lost almost all power and after inspecting the engine compartment the next day (thinking I must have a huge vaccum leak somewhere), I found oil seeping from the #3 exhaust flange (when it meets the head). Well, when I pulled the cover and manvuered it out of the way, I found clunks of metal (I think it was aluminum) littering the pushrods, rocker arms, and valve springs. Thus, I know that head needs to come off. Has anyone ever seen this kind of thing happen before? Any ideas on what could have caused this on heads that were machined about 5K ago?

dave
