It still shouldn't cost the kind of money that started this thread. One can buy a quality rebuilt long block from a good rebuilder such as AVP for under $1400. Many on the list like these better than the VW rebuilds. Here in the Tucson area, a couple of good shops are charging about $600 to do the exchange. That still puts the total in the $2000 range, or a bit less, while the price quoted to the list member was over $4000.
