Hi Volks, Volkswagen and german TUV (official vehicle technical control) are giving their ok for a 2000 kg (more than 4000 lbs) braked trailor here in germany for the TD, 92, 95 and 112 hp 2WD engines. The syncros with same engines are allowed to tow 2500 kg trailors. This will only work up to 12 % slope.

I towed an Eriba Pan Camper (600 kg/ 1200 lbs) from Wolfsburg to England and back some years ago with the max. legal 50 to 55mph with my former 112 hp 2.1 l auto and got the best mpg ever (less than 10l/100 km, I know, you calculate it the other way).

We towed a 4 wheeled trailor loaded with a NSU Kettenkrad (1200 kg + 600 kg for the trailor) from Magdebug (ex GDR) to Braunschweig without any problems. The mpg was very poor....

Every year we go to the Mannheim swap market with a 800 kg loaded trailor (1600 lbs +) 270 mls and retour with my 70 hp '77 westy. It' realy not overpowered but works well (and leaves the Mercedes Diesel MB 100 Campers far behind us on *every* hill).

As long as you don't do it all the year it should be ok
