I recently tried the ATF in the oil trick on my '86 Jetta with noisy lifters. I just put a swig of ATF in the oil (don't know how much, just enough to go glug-glug when pouring it in) and then drove for about three weeks. The lifter noise went away, the oil became black, and the oil filter was heavier than usual when I changed the oil. That stuff sure cuts the crud that builds up in 180k miles of driving!
