A stuck lifter isn't a defective part if it can be unstuck by adding a high detergent additive to cut the varnish and unstick it. I don't know about this Valve Medic, but if the oil came out black after 5 min, I'd be tempted (compelled) to do a second oil change in a hundred miles or less to get ALL the crud out. I've read of old bugs cooking their engines from running thousands of miles with non-detergent oil, then being switched to detergent oil.
