OK about the muffler. As I understand it the low mileage is what's doing in your muffler. Especially if you drive only a few miles to the store and back for the most part. When the car starts condensation pools a little water in the muffler. If you were driving a long way the muffler would stay hot long enough to evaporate the water. But if it's a short trip the water just sits there. If it's always short trips this happens over and over until the water starts to rust through.

My grandad used to drill a small hole in the muffler of the car my grandmother used only to go to the store to let the water drain out. He swore it worked to save constantly changing the muffler. But my guess is these days with the advanced smog tests that hole would register as leak and you'd flunk the inspection.

So I don't have answers. Just theories. (not enough education, or too much:)
