Listees,

JC Whitney lists in its Winter 1998 VW Catalog an EICM for 1984-85 Vanagon 1.9L (as well as for a variety of other VW models, including some 80 to 87 Cabrioets, Dashers, Foxes, Golfs Jettas, Quantums, Rabbits and Sciroccos) for $39.95. I have an 84 Westy.

Question: Is this the black box about which more than a few Listees write horror stories of severe failures and high expenses? The item illustrated appears to have a 7-pin connector, in general appearance, similar to a circuit breaker at one's home. Is anyone familiar with this, and, at this price, would it be wise to have a spare in the kit for long road journeys, much as I have spare belts, plugs, oil, distributor cap, rotor and the other items on many Listees' lists?

Which of our supplier listees offers the $24.00 coolant pump mentioned recently in one member's posting?

Thanks,

Tom Hanlon Palm Springs, CA
