Subject: Windshield? Leaking

My '88 GL has rainwater getting in behind my my instrument cluster. It dribbles down behind the fuse block(!!) and soaks the carpet under my feet. It's also getting into the clutch pedal shaft causing it rust and bind. I have tried everything that I can think of. I have put black silicone seal under the entire outside edge of the windshield gasket, replaced the antenna with a new one sealed with silicone, removed both wiper arm shafts and sealed those. I've even removed and sealed the "Wolfsburg Crest" in front of the doors. The only thing that seems to remain is to seal the inner edge of the windshield gasket where it holds the glass. Does it seem possible that water could somehow get under the glass and leak into the van without being visible on the inside? Anyone seen this before?

Also, I agree with those that vote in support of the Vanagon being a well designed, very useful, fun vehicle. The problems that we deal with are to be expected. Our GL is 10 years old, and it still looks and runs great! Yesterday a guy in a new Volvo hooked a dangerous turn into the gas station where I was filling the Vanagon. Came up to me and said, "excuse me, would you ever consider selling the van?" I told him no, wouldn't think of it. He said he asks every Vanagon owner that he sees and that's what they all say. The Vanagon has personality, and character. If I wanted an invisible appliance to get me from here to there, I'd be driving a Camry.

Gary
