Kevin,

USE OE FILTERS!!!! Or at least a Mann German filter (oe Equiv).

As far as a tool, I use a LARGE pair of Channel lock pliers to do that job:)

The difference IS in the pressure valve "Built into" the filter, the OE filter is made to give the correct pressure at the correct time.

The FRAM Filter you installed is designed to work on a Ford Escort, Ford mustang and all sorts of other makes and model cars.

Could the Vanagon have the same oiling needs as an escort???????? I don't know nor do I care. I know that there has been more cars brought to our shop due to flashing oil lights etc and the common thing ALL of those cars had was an oil change at a "Jiffy Lube" type of place.

Kevin, I'm not ranting on you just passing on what I deal with EVERYDAY in our shop. I hope that someday gets something out of this???
