Subject: 85 Auto Tranny Fluid?
Comments: To: vanagon@vanagon.com

I'd like to change the fluid in my auto tranny(gasket and filter as well) but I'm having difficulty in finding Dexron II fluid anywhere. I've been told that nobody produces it anymore, only Dexron III. I have also heard conflicting opinions as to whether or not the two are compatible. I spoke with someone at Redline last week and was told that their synthetic ATF is Dexron II, but it is actually Dexron II E/D. The gentleman at Redline also said that when Dexron III came out, VW gave it the ok, but later changed that decision and now recommend against it. I don't know whether to think this means that Dexron III caused problems or that VW can make a killing selling Dexron II, since nobody else carries it. Where can I get fluid besides the dealer? What's the diff between Dex II and Dex II E or D? What do all the other auto owners out there use? This is my first auto so my knowledge is nil. I'm a little nervous about just throwing any old fluid in there. BTW the tranny has 110K on it and seems to be working fine. TIA
