        Wonder where the Maryland DOT got their numbers?

        These numbers don't jibe with the American Petroleum Institute's
        which show taxes paid on motor gasoline by state (as of 9/87):

        1. Connecticut: 58.7
        2. Hawaii:      54.2
        3. Nevada:      51.7
        4. New York     48.8
        5. Rhode Island:47.4
        6. California:  46.4
        7. Montana      46.2

        and so on

        I believe that API's chart includes Federal + State taxes. Local
        sales taxes on gasoline vary by county...here in California, sales
        tax adds another ~8% to the cost of fuel.
