I finally got around to rebuilding the steering gear for our '91 Vanagon. Thanks to all on the list who offered advice and counsel. The taking apart was the worst - I had to use a Dremel tool with a cutoff wheel to sever the fluid lines, as the flare nuts were hopelessly frozen to the fittings on the gear. I intend to braze a piece of brake line over the cuts in the pressure line, and use a bit of hydraulic hose and clamps on the return, when I put it back together. With a little luck, we will be driving tomorrow.. Next challenge: replacing the cat, O2 sensor, and muffler...
