My syncro does the same thing whenever it "lugs." I queried Dennis Haynes
about this and he seemed to think it wasn't a problem. Here's what he said:

Then don't sweat it. Make sure the front diff is well lubricated and maybe
consider synthetic to prolong the inevitable as long as possible. Some
Syncros have made this noise forever.

Sounds like your rpms aren't high enough when you shift from 2nd and 3rd--it
shouldn't lug.
