Many people are asking about the meaning of the different sounds
emanating from their vans. I compiled a list of the more interesting
sounds my vans have made over the years.
1. Loud clicking with intermittent horrible grinding from the rear
at slow speed. Very scary.
Cause: Usually, just some sand or dirt in one of the rear brake drums.
Repair: Usually disappears by itself after a few miles.
2. Deep heavy rumbling, first only in turns, then increasing in frequency.
Cause: Bearing failure.
Repair: Identify and replace the bearing.
3. Grinding sound when accelerating up a steep hill, but disappears
on flat ground.
Cause: Worn CV joints.
Repair: Replace CV joints.
4. High-pitched squeal every time brakes are applied.
Cause: Front brakes unevenly worn.
Repair: Service front brakes.
5. Quiet scraping sound, when you apply brakes first time in the day.
Cause: Rust on the brake discs.
Repair: Just brake a few times to wear off the rust.
6. Mysterious creaking sound from the front, when driving over bumps.
Like bullfrogs living under your van. Can become a totally
obnoxious irritant.
Cause: Front upper swing arm bushings dry.
Repair: Usually not an emergency, but bushings should
be replaced in time.
7. Loud banging when going over bumps.
Like someone hitting with a hammer.
Cause: After-market shock absorber didn't fit tight on
mounting bolts. Too much play.
Repair: Replace shock and make sure mounting fits tight
on upper and lower mounting bolts. Replace bolts if worn.
8. Even, steady grinding sound from the back when motor idling.
Cause: Low transaxle oil.
Repair: Fill transaxle with oil and say a prayer.
9. Loud ticking and tacking from the back when you first start up.
Cause: Hydraulic valve lifters.
Repair: Change oil, fill to the top. Drive at moderate speed until
it disappears. If not, use oil additive to lubricate lifters.
10. Loud thundering when you first get on freeway.
Cause: You forgot to take down the pop-top.
Repair: Pull over, and try again.
I experienced all of these interesting sounds.
If your van makes a bit of a mix of all of these,
it probably is pretty happy.
